DEBUT SUCCESS: SPE UMPSA SECURES 6TH PLACE AT PETROBOWL APRQ 2025

DEBUT SUCCESS: SPE UMPSA SECURES 6TH PLACE AT PETROBOWL APRQ 2025

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) UMPSA Student Chapter (SC) proudly participated in the PetroBowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier (APRQ) 2025, held from 8 to 10 July 2025 at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP). This marked UMPSA’s first appearance in the regional PetroBowl competition, which featured 16 universities from across the Asia Pacific region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Australia, and Vietnam. SPE PetroBowl is an annual quiz competition for student chapters, where teams compete by answering technical and non-technical questions related to the oil and gas industry. The top five teams from this round will represent the region at the Championship round during the SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) in Houston this October.

Representing UMPSA were four undergraduate students from the Bachelor of Mechanical (Petroleum) Engineering Technology (BTO) program—Elangovan A/L P Jkatishan, Soo Wei Yee, Nor Hayati Rosli, and Nor Azwaniza Yahaya—along with one Master of Science student, Nur Najwa Syuhada Suhaidi, a BTO alumna. The team was led by Ts. Dr. Norasyikin Ismail as coach and team advisor. Despite being first-time participants, the team delivered an impressive performance, securing 6th place overall in the Asia Pacific region. This achievement reflects their strong technical knowledge and effective teamwork under pressure. The experience has not only raised UMPSA’s profile within the regional SPE network but also encouraged future participation in upcoming competitions.
