KUANTAN BEACH CLEANUP ORGANIZED BY SPE UMPSA STUDENT CHAPTER: A SYNERGY OF UMPSA STUDENTS, LECTURERS, AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
On 11 January, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) UMPSA Student Chapter, in collaboration with the Oil & Gas Cluster at the Faculty of Chemical & Process Engineering Technology (FTKKP), organized the "Kuantan Beach Care Collective" community service program at Pantai Cempaka, Kuantan, Pahang. The program aimed to promote environmental awareness, encourage volunteerism, and foster community involvement in protecting the local beaches and surrounding environment.
The event attracted 60 participants, including 5 staff members from Reservoir Link, 5 faculty members from FTKKP, and 50 students from UMPSA. The program started with the registration of volunteers and a light breakfast at 8:30 AM. This was followed by an introductory briefing by the Head of the Oil & Gas Cluster, who provided an overview of the event, divided the participants into cleaning teams, and outlined the safety precautions.
The "Beach Cleanup Challenge," began at 9:30 AM, where volunteers were divided into groups to clean the beach. The task was to collect trash and recyclable materials such as plastic, glass, and metals, and then sort and weigh the collected waste. The session aimed to instill a sense of responsibility in participants regarding waste management and recycling practices.
At noon, the volunteers took a break and enjoyed lunch before resuming the work. The final activities included a photo session to commemorate the event and a reflection on the success of the program.
The "Kuantan Beach Care Collective" program not only helped reduce waste and pollution in the local beach area but also promoted environmental awareness among the participants. It successfully brought together students, faculty members, and staff from different organizations to collaborate in a meaningful way for the greater good of the community.
The program successfully achieved its goal of raising awareness about environmental conservation while fostering a sense of shared responsibility for preserving the cleanliness of our natural spaces. It also offered participants a chance to collaborate, enhance their teamwork skills, and build stronger connections within the local community.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers, sponsors (Orioner Hightech Sdn Bhd and Reservoir Link), and our partners -Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan, Alam Flora, and SWCorporation, for their invaluable support in ensuring the success of this initiative.
